Captain Ronald Johnson is a brother in Christ, and I am thankful for his book. There are so many questions I have for him. He recalls the story of his closest encounter of having to shoot a suspect. If that suspect would have grabbed his gun, would it have been different? I once heard another minority officer tell a group of kids that the officer who shot Michael Brown was not a racist. "if you try to grab my gun, I don't care if you are stripped or poke-dot...you are going to get shot”. But maybe this question and others don't matter. Maybe that is why they are not addressed. Maybe all that matters are for us to take hope from the leadership that Capt. Ronald Johnson displayed, and to pray those lessons are remembered. The book is definitely a good read.

I think this devotional is perfect for the woman who is busy and on the go. This book is small enough to be carried in your purse so it can always be with you. Each piece of text isn’t long at all which I find that to also be a plus. Some devotions can be too long that you forget what you read or if you’re busy you never have time to focus long enough to finish it. These deviations are brief and full of encouraging and engaging subjects that I believe can be relevant to any woman reading this. This devotion includes a grey satin bookmark so you never lose your place if you have to close in a hurry.

  • We are like a pencil in the hands of God. He is writing out a beautiful plan for his world, using us as an instrument. The problem with pencils is they need to be sharpened and if the lead inside them is broken they become unusable and brittle. The devil hates God, hates his creation, and wants to destroy everything good and noble, he knows if he can keep us broken on the inside, we will be of no use to our children, our partners, or our world. God on the other hand has a great love for each of us and longs for communion to be restored with us. He wants our internal life to be strong, vibrant, and prosperous, he wants to tell you, “you can do it”, “you can make it”, and “I love what you do”. Do you feel tired, worn out, or burnt out, come to the one who offers living water and drink in his love.

Psalms 31:24 Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.

  • Proverbs 22:24-25 Make no friendship with a man that is given to anger; And with a wrathful man, thou shalt not go: Lest thou learn these ways, and get a snare to thy soul.

This does not mean that we should not associate with a person who is angry due to the injustice done to them. But rather we should not be in agreement with the attitude that people who have a lifestyle of anger have. Angry people often have cutting words, are critical of others. God wants us to think the best of others, being in agreement with a person who dislikes others is not a good thing. We need to check our words and make sure they are not words that cut others apart.

  • Revelations 3:20 Listen! I am standing and knocking at your door. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and we will eat together.

When Jesus comes into your life he does not come to make your life miserable. He does not come to make you unsociable, and hard to get along with. He says he will come into our lives and eat with us. When we eat with a person we are getting to know them, having an interest in their lives, doing something good and enjoyable. God wants a relationship with you, he has an interest in your life and will do for you what is good and enjoyable. He wants you to have joy and peace in your life.

  • Life is a little bit like an exam. There is a set time to get life right and at the end of the exam we will be rewarded for our efforts. Jesus’ Easter gift is a little like an eraser, if we make a mistake we can get rid of it by using the rubber, any wrong thing we do in life can be removed. Like with a pencil and rubber it is no good just rubbing out a mistake, you need to replace the mistake with the right answer, you can’t keep entering the wrong answer and rubbing it out again and again, you will never finish the exam on time. Let’s all rub out our mistakes, replace it with the right answer, and continue with our exam.
